Cupcakes & Bees

9.06.2018

Don’t worry, I haven’t made disgusting cupcakes using bees and insects as the title might suggest! But today’s post has a mixture of photos and I couldn’t think of a fitting title.

Anyway, I visited my Nana & Grandad today and we did a bit of baking together.

When I was a child, my Nana would often bake with my sister and I and it’s one of my fondest childhood memories. At the time, we weren’t really interested in the technicalities, we were really just there to lick the spoons and taste the cakes. Now that I’m older, it’s still a lovely thing to do together but this time I didn’t even lick the spoon!

We made these lovely pink butterfly cakes. The cake itself was supposed to be pink but after baking, they came out grey! (Oops!)

The butter cream, however, was a lovely pastel pink shade. I used mini marshmallows to make the body of the butterfly before sprinkling the whole thing in icing sugar.

They came out quite well, if I do say so myself! I can’t wait to tuck into them later.

As we waited for the cupcakes to bake, we spent a little bit of time in the garden. Today was an unexpected warm day and the garden was alive with insects. I took my camera and snapped some photos.

This is my favourite photo from today. There were two ants inside this flower bud, running around and disappearing between the unopened petals. I love peering into their tiny world.

My Nana has a few bee boxes in her garden so we checked them to see if there was any activity.

The first one was empty, but as you can see by the last photo, the bees have been pretty busy in the other one! I found this really fascinating!

That’s about it for this blog post, I hope you liked it!

  2. That looks like a gorgeous garden! Can’t beat a bit of baking and then enjoying the fruits of your labours in the great outdoors. I did a double take at the ants photo – thought they’d found a way onto your cakes, but thankfully not!
